Agios Dimitrios Arrives in Baltimore July 8, 2019
This 299x40m (981x131ft) container ship was built in 2011 by Hanjin Heavy Industries in Busan, South Korea according to BalticShipping.com. Referencing the blog posting I did for the Orca I, Posiedon shipping, parent company of Technomar Shipping who’s logo is on this ship’s funnel, merged with Global Ship Lease and is the current owner of this 6,572 TEU ship which also has 500 reefer plugs.
Like the Orca I she had been leased to ZIM and the last voyage indicated by ZIM was March 16, 2019 from New York. She is currently leased to MSC and can be seen on their fleet list. According to this First Quarter Results report from Global Ship Lease the lease rate is $12,500 a day.
I found this video of this ship arriving in Port of New York early one June, 2019 morning.
This is not the first container ship to have this name. An ill fated container ship which was built in 1988 by CSBC Corporation in Taiwan (according to BalticShipping.com) ran aground near Gaolan Island, China in 2009 after being caught in a typhoon. The 3,428 TEU vessel was declared a wreck after two unsuccessful attempts to refloat her.
My video below opens with Dann Marine Towing tugboat Sun Coast heading out of Baltimore, Maryland. Tugboat April Moran can be seen moving into position to intercept the Agios Dimitrios. After the outbound container ship Orca I passes the pilot boat Baltimore can be seen approaching. Soon after the pilot boat comes alongside a pair of pilots can be seen climbing aboard.
As she nears showing her bulbous bow a large number of shipping companies are represented by containers on board, the largest number of which appear to be MSC. As she passes under the Key Bridge water begins pouring out of her anchor port. I do not know what the purpose of this is. In the next scene the tugboat Lynne Moran can be seen alongside and a pilot making their way down tot he waiting pilot boat. Also watch for the bag being lowered!
