Cable Layer Durable Comes to Baltimore May 27, 2019
This 140x21m (459x69ft) ship was built in 2002 by Keppel Shipyard in Singapore according to BalticShipping.com. It is owned by a Maryland company called Transoceanic Cable Ship Company based here in Baltimore situated near the Cruise Maryland Terminal. They do not have a web presence that I could find but I did find a vendor profile page that sheds a little light on them. They are in turn owned by SubCom which has a lot of undersea cable projects. I saw a sister ship, the Dependable, arrive on July 15, 2020.
In the video below you’ll see she has a very interesting profile with equipment both fore and aft the bridge. I am curious as to where cable would be stored. The stern has an interesting shape which I assume helps to feed cable to the ocean floor.
She was preceded into town by the container ship MSC Carolina, and roro ships Rhea Leader and Cattleya Ace.
