Dependable Comes to Baltimore July 15, 2020

This 139x21m (456x69ft) cable laying ship was built in 2002 by Keppel Shipyard in Singapore according to BalticShipping.com. It is owned by a Maryland company called Transoceanic Cable Ship Company based here in Baltimore situated near the Cruise Maryland Terminal. They do not have a web presence that I could find but I did find a vendor profile page that sheds a little light on them. They are in turn owned by SubCom which has a lot of undersea cable projects. I have also seen a sister ship, the Durable on May 27, 2019.

This July 9, 2019 Maritime Hawai’i article has photos of this ship in Honolulu as well as some details about her. This page has more details about this ship and her sisters as built for a predecessor company, TYCO.

In my 5 and a half minute video below she can be seen approaching on the Patapsco River towards Baltimore, Maryland with some pleasure boats in the area. As she nears her unusual shape becomes apparent, looking in many ways like a military ship. After she passes Fort Carrol the barge Double Skin 202 comes into view being pushed by a Vane Brothers tug Red Hook. As she passes under the Key Bridge cranes for a BGE overhead wire project are seen.
