Hermes Leader Comes to Baltimore August 19, 2020
This 199x35m (563×115ft) vehicles carrier is owned by Ray Car Carriers according to BalticShipping.com and operated by NYK Line. She was built in 2015 by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
She quickly became a hero when she rescued 336 people on July 14 in the Mediterranean Sea. I have been unable to find more details about this rescue so I don’t know what vessel they were rescued from.
I last saw this ship in April of 2019, click here to see my blog posting.
This video from an unknown location in 2017 shows her at dock and the vehicles on dock give a size comparison. Also taken in 2017 this video shows her arriving at Piraeus Car Terminal in Greece. Towards the end you can see the bow thruster working in conjunction with the tug.
In my 10 minute video below she can be seen turning from the Chesapeake Bay onto the Pastapsco River while passing the outbound roro Swift Ace. The pilot boat Maryland approaches for the pilot boarding which takes place on the far side out of sight. As she approaches her paint still looks fresh.
In the scenes following the ship passing under the Key Bridge the tug Timothy McAllister can be seen lending assistance. A scene of one of the floating cranes working on BGE’s new powerline project is seen followed by a floating drydock being serviced in a drydock. Seagirt Marine Terminal cranes can be seen working an Evergreen container ship as the Hermes Leader has turned heading for Dundalk.
