Lady Alara Departed Baltimore October 26, 2019

This 178x28m (584x92ft) bulk freighter was built in 2011 by Tsuji Heavy Industries in China and is owned by Istanbul, Turkey based Devbulk. See this handy data sheet for more info about this ship.

I found this video of this ship in Finland in May of 2018.

7936-1 Pilot Boat Baltimore and Bulker Lady Alara

I participated in a tour of Domino Sugar a few days earlier and was able to observe this ship being unloaded. Click here for the blog post and click here for the video that includes footage of her being unloaded.

7980-1 Releasing Lady Alara's Lines

It was just luck that put me in the right place at the right time to be able to observe her departure. I’d been in this part of town to tour the visiting French Navy ship FS Garonne (click here for the blog posting).

7995-1 Tug Theresa S. Krause and bulker Lady Alara

In the first scene of my video below the historic tugboat Theresa S. Krause is seen tying to the ship in order to assist her departure as the pilot boat Baltimore passes. In the next scene Baltimore’s largest fireboat, the John R. Frazier approaches. Shortly thereafter the ship’s crew can be seen hauling in line that had been used to moor her to the dock.

8000-1 Tug Theresa S. Krause and bulker Lady Alara

In the next scene the ship can be seen moving while the tugboat Theresa S. Krause pulls her away from the dock. The propeller can be seen splashing as she builds up speed. She can then be seen getting steering assistance from the tug has she begins outbound on the Patapsco River.

8038-1 Bulker Lady Alara

In the final scenes the red Rukert crane can be seen as well as the blue and white container cranes of Seagirt Terminal. The large grey ships are part of the US Military Sealift Command’s Ready Reserve Force.
