Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland August 7, 2019
(This post is part of a (mostly) non-ship series about a trip to the West I took during July and August of 2019)
Located in Portland Oregon the Lan Su Chinese Garden was opened to the public September 14, 2000.
A result of Portland’s sister city relationship with Suzhou, China, the garden was designed by Kuang Zhen, modeled after a Ming Dynasty garden, and constructed by 65 artisans.
Although about 500 tons of rock was brought from China including Chinese scholar’s rocks, no plants were brought from China due to import bans and were instead sourced locally from plants that had been imported prior to the ban.
This garden succeeds beautifully in its mission to “cultivate an oasis of tranquil beauty and harmony to inspire, engage and educate our global community in the appreciation of a richly authentic Chinese culture.”
This is a beautiful place to visit in the middle of a large city and at $12.95 for adults, $11.95 for seniors and $9.95 for students it is a small price to pay to travel to another time and another place in a matter of steps.
