Maersk Utah Comes to Baltimore February 8, 2020
This 292x32m (958x105ft) container ship was built in 2006 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea and is owned by Maersk Line according to this Clyde Maritime page. She was renamed from Maersk Gloucester in 2009. She can carry 4,154 TEU and has 700 reefer plugs.
According to this Maritime Executive article this ship is one of 9 ships reflagged into their US fleet in 2009 for its Maritime Security Program (MSP) which leverages commercially viable, militarily useful, privately-owned vessels and intermodal assets to meet national defense and other security requirements.
This ship made the news in 2013 when she participated in the rescue of 83 Syrian refugees. Check out this Professional Mariner article for details.
This ship was seen January 25th, 2020 by friend of Baltimore Shipspotting, Shipping TV heading out of Felixstowe, UK. Check out that video. Also check out this 2017 drone video of her entering Cape Fear River.
In my video below she can be seen turning on to the Patapsco River from Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. She can then be seen passing outbound roro ship Progress Ace. Observe the pilot boarding the ship from pilot boat Maryland in the next scene. As she nears it can be seen she is coming due for a paint job. A special load can be seen with its cover blown off, which was still attached in Shipping TV’s video above.
