Oxford-Bellevue Ferry August 8, 2020
Crossing the Tred Avon River for nearly 340 years is the historic Oxford-Bellevue Ferry. I first heard about this ferry when exploring on google maps. I decided to visit the ferry and see what it is like.
The current ferry, The Talbot, was built in 1980 by Blount Shipyard in Warren, Rhode Island. She has room for 9 cars plus some foot and bicycle passengers.
The Southern terminus is at historic Oxford, Maryland, a small town with a long history and now a nice spot to visit with bed & breakfasts and historic houses.
The Tred Avon River starts in Easton, Maryland and empties into the Choptank River which in turn empties into the Chesapeake Bay. There’s a good amount of pleasure boat traffic as well as commercial fishing boats.
The ride on the ferry itself is quite pleasant and although subject to wave action from passing boats I found it to be not much noticable.
This ferry makes a nice addition to a drive through the Maryland countryside and I recommend seeking it out. See more photos I took at this location by clicking here. Check out my video below as well.
