Salome Comes to Baltimore November 7, 2020
This 265x32m (870x105ft) Singapore flagged roro ship was built in 2012 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan for Wallenius Wilhelmsen according to this data sheet provided by the ship’s owner which also indicates she can carry about 6,000 cars.
This 2018 press release indicates that she is the first of their ships to be repainted into the new brand colors of sea-green and flint-grey. The 40 second video within shows her here in Baltimore!
In a sign that stowaways continue to be a problem on ships this October 2020 BBC article indicates a group of 11 Albanian migrants were found aboard at Southampton Docks in the UK.
This 2013 video by friend of Baltimore Shipspotting, binmei.jp, shows her sailing the Kanmon Strait in Japan still wearing her old colors. In a different perspective this 2015 timelapse video shows the view from the bridge as she departs Tacoma, Washington.
This 2019 video shows her arriving in Pape’ete, Tahiti in her new colors.
In my 11 minute video below she can be seen arriving on the Patapsco River amidst local pleasureboat traffic. Pilot boat Baltimore comes alongside and a pilot can be seen climbing the ladder. As she nears it can be seen that although no longer fresh her paint has withstood 2 years at sea quite well.
Dann Marine Towing tug Sapphire Coast can be seen passing the Salome as she begins her turn towards Dundalk with the assistance of tug Patrick McAllister. As she makes her final approach to do another Dann Marine Towing tug, Discovery Coast, can be seen pushing a loaded barge.
