SS Antares Comes to Baltimore, October 3, 2018
The ro-ro cargo ship SS Antares (T-AKR-294) is a 288x32m (946ft 2inx105ft 6in) oddball of a ship. She is currently in her second career having been born in 1972 as a high speed container ship for SeaLand, now a Maersk company and named SS Sea-Land Galloway. The company sold her and 7 sisters in 1982 due to her high operating cost to the US Navy who gave her the name she goes by today. Algol Class vehicle cargo ships are all named for stars and the namesake of this ship is about 550 light years away. She was converted for her new duties in New Orleans, Louisiana and delivered in 1984. Read more about her at Wikipedia.
She happened to be returning to Baltimore, Maryland on the day ships were arriving for Maryland Fleet Week 2018. She was not a participant but proved to be a happy bonus. For best results watch in FULL SCREEN. You may need to watch for 20+ seconds before full resolution kicks in.
