St. Michaels Winery January 12, 2020
Located in historic St. Michaels on the Eastern shore of Maryland this winery lives in a building that one imagines might have been part of the town’s industrial history.
I went to check them out after visiting the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum located in town.
Their website doesn’t say anything about where their grapes are raised or where the wines are made but I would presume they are made nearby.
They have some tastings options available in their attractive tasting room and I selected the $11 sweet flight which included 11 tastings. I loved the copper top of the bar which has a lot of personality!
I found them to be much better tasting and sweeter than I expected.
The first was the St. Michaels White, a Vidal Blanc. I was surprised at how good and sweet this wine is.
The next wine introduced the name Gollywobbler with the Gollywobbler Red made from Concord grapes.
Gollywobbler Pink was up next with a blend of Concord and Niagara grapes.
Next was the Gollywobbler White made from Niagara grapes.
Then the Red Sky Gollywobbler Sangria made an appearance, a Concord and apple wine base with a pomegranate/blueberry sangria. Tasty!
Next up was the Gollywobbler Peach which had an even better flavor than I expected.
The Gollywobbler Black made its appearance next, a tasty blackberry Merlot.
Probably my least favorite of this lineup the Bubbly Wobbler Black but only because I dislike carbonated drinks.
Full Throttle Gollywobbler Black was a second variation of the Gollywobbler Black with increased alcohol content at 18% vs. the 12% of the regular. This one would be favored by those used to a rum or whisky and water and have a sweet tooth like myself.
Cafe Du Vin Salted Caramel introduces one of two more novelty flavors. This is a sweet cold brew infused wine with brandy and I found its flavor to be quite distinctive.
Chocolate Zin was the final wine of this flight and is a Red Zinfandel infused with a blend of natural chocolate extract.
It was very hard to choose a clear favorite as I loved the entire Gollywobbler line with the exception of the bubbly. I wound up taking home a bottle of Pink after a difficult choice. If you’re not into sweets as I am they have an even larger selection of dry red and white wines and I definitely recommend making this place a part of your day in St. Michaels!
