Talisman Departs Baltimore September 27, 2020
This 240x32m (787x105ft) Norway flagged roro ship was built in 2000 by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering in Seoul, South Korea according to BalticShipping and is owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen. According to this Wallenius Wilhelmsen page she can carry up to 5,496 cars.
She was celebrated and christened here in Baltimore in August of 2000 according to this Baltimore Sun article that describes the hopes this ship represented for the future of Baltimore’s port strategy to bring ship traffic back. It has paid off as Baltimore is currently the number one RoRo port in the United States.
In 2001 this ship made the news when she delivered a Japanese bullet train to Southampton Docks following a 47-day voyage to be put on display at the National Railway Museum in York according to this Daily Echo article.
In 2018 The Norwegian American article entitled The Norwegian seaman in decline featured the Captain of this ship, Espen Derbakk.
In 2019 this ship delivered a 350t generator from Germany to Australia according to this Heavy Lift article which includes photos.
This Maritime Executive article from earlier this year reports that Joton Hull Skating Solutions will be tested aboard this ship. It is an interesting device that cleans the hull, check out the video on their page.
Check out this video from 2009 when she arrived at Port Kembla in New South Wales, Australia. This one from 2016 shows her sailing the Kanmon Strait in Japan.
In my 4 and a half minute video below she can be seen heading out on the Patapsco River having concluded her business here in Baltimore, Maryland. She makes an uneventful passage as she passed the camera.
You can view my photography (more than just ships!) here and more videos here.
