Tarago Comes to Baltimore December 23, 2020
This 240x32m (787x105ft) Norway flagged roro ship was built in 2000 by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering in Seoul, South Korea according to Sjohistorie.no and owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen.
According to this Freightwaves article about the naming of this ship she can carry up to 5,310 cars.
In 2002 an unfortunate incident occurred aboard this ship while berthed here in Baltimore when a driver for PO Ports was injured while attempting to unload cargo from the ship according to this casetext case information page.
Just days before coming here to Baltimore the ship’s master was medevaced via helicopter on December 7, 2020 according to this Marine Bulletin article which includes a video of the medevac taking place. I hope they are in better shape now!
Friend of Baltimore Shipspotting, binmei.jp, got this video back in 2011 with her original orange and white paint scheme passing through the Kanmon Strait in Japan. He saw it again in this 2018 video.
In my 7 minute video below she is wearing her elegant new black and blue paint as she heads towards Baltimore, Maryland on the Patapsco River. About 6 minutes in two crew members can be seen at the bottom of her giant stern ramp. The final seconds of the video is a timelapse of the stern ramp being extended. You can tell how heavy it is by how the ship rights itself after it touches ground.
