Thalassa Elpida Arrives in Baltimore September 5, 2019
This 368x51m (1207.35×167.32ft) was built in 2014 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea according to scheepvaartwest. She is owned by Enesel Group and time chartered to Evergreen Line.
Although at first glance she appears to be a sister ship to the Evergreen Triton, the largest container ship so far to arrive in Baltimore, Maryland, the Thalassa Elpida carries 13,806 TEUs to the Triton’s 14,424 despite them having the same size. She also has 800 reefer plugs.
According to this video by the Port of Baltimore she made a record 5,181 container moves during her stay, a record previously held by the container ship MSC Maria Elena with 4,395 container moves. See this Baltimore Patch article for more info.
This ship suffered a mishap May 1, 2019 in Piraeus, Greece when she collided with a dock according to this Maritime Bulletin article.
Watch this video of this ship passing through the Panama Canal! Check out this overhead photo of her in the Panama Canal. Numerous videos of this ship can be found on YouTube. Here’s one of her departing Felixstowe, UK January 14, 2019.
In my video below the pilot boat Baltimore can be seen intercepting her to put a pilot aboard. The tugboat Lynne Moran (which I was aboard when the Evergreen Triton made her arrival) is next seen moving into position. After the Thalassa Elpida turns the pilot boat Maryland can also be seen approaching the ship. As she passes under the Key bridge the tugboat April Moran can be seen waiting for the ship before maneuvering to go alongside. In the final scenes a third tugboat joins which appears to be the Bridget McAllister to assist in pushing this big ship to dock as the last of the day’s light wanes.
