Giulia I Comes to Baltimore October 18, 2020
This 179x32m (587x98ft) Malta flagged bulker was built in 2014 by Zhoushan Shipyard and owned by Dublin, Ireland based d’Amico Dry according to Baltishipping.com.
Although multiple sources listed Zhoushan Shipyard as the builder of this ship it does not appear that there is a specific shipyard by this name. I did, however, find two potential shipyards that could have built this ship. One is COSCO – Zhoushan Shipyard and the other is Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard.
While looking for clarity on where this ship was built I found another page, Marinus.Directory, listed a Russian company called Eco Shipping Ltd-MTA as the owner of this ship and dAmico Dry as the manager. Neither company has this ship on their fleet list.
Tragedy struck this ship shortly after her January 30th departure from Norfolk, Virginia as she was making her way to Africa. According to this CBC article she was struck by a high way 320 nautical miles Southeast of Nova Scotia. Of the 20 person Filipino crew one was killed and 3 other were injured.
I did not find any video of this ship other than my own below.
In my 5 and a half minute video below she can be seen approaching on the Patapsco River towards Baltimore, Maryland passing the outbound tanker Sunrise Ray. The pilot boat Baltimore can be seen coming alongside. She makes an uneventful passing amidst some local boat traffic.
