Maryland Dove at CBMM July 26, 2020

I went to St. Michaels to ride the Patriot cruise vessel (you can read about and see photos of that trip by clicking here) but wasn’t also going to miss a chance to see the progress on the construction of the new Maryland Dove. You can see photos from my first trip to see the Maryland Dove back in January by clicking this blog posting here.

4766-1 Museum Entrance

She is being constructed at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum which is well worth a visit, they have a large number and variety of artifacts about the history of life on the bay. This ship is a reproduction of the vessel that accompanied the first European settlers to Maryland in 1634. Click here for more information on the Maryland Dove.

In my first trip I was able to enter the Boatshop which had portions of the ship being assembled on the shop floor as well as outside near the ship under construction outside.

Maryland Dove as seen from the Patriot

During this trip the whole area was fenced off and I wasn’t able to get as close to the ship as I could in January. Additionally the ship is under a covered structure.

However, the sides of the structure are open and I could see the ship has made substantial progress and looks much more complete.

A front view of the construction is afforded from the water. If you don’t have your own boat a good view is provided from the Patriot on the way out and back in to St. Michaels. The cruise is very nice so I recommend doing it.

Check out this page and the video on it to see more about the Maryland Dove. Checking this page regularly will keep you informed of developments. As of this writing the most recent entry talks about a donation of wood from an Osage orange tree by a local resident. This wood will be used in construction of the ship.

4490-1 Freedom's Figurehead with Mask

Another change I saw that shows a sign of the times is the figurehead of the Freedom is now wearing a mask! See more photos I’ve taken at the museum by clicking here. Newer photos are at the bottom.
