Parsifal Comes to Baltimore March 10, 2021

This 265x32m (870x105ft) Singapore flagged roro ship was built in 2011 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki, Japan for Wallenius Wilhelmsen according to this cool data sheet provided by WW which also indicates she can carry about 6,000 cars.

According to this webpage WW Parsifal is one of their Mark V ships. This Ship Technology article indicates that these ships are designed to transport and handle larger and heavier cargo at reduced fuel consumption.

This video posted in 2011 by Wallenius Wilhelmsen goes into details of what a Mark V is showing the ship built before the Parsifal, the Tonsberg.

Some blue Linie containers can be seen on the top of the ship as she passes. This WW news item describes what is happening in these containers: Aquavit maturation!

7836-1 RoRo Parsifal and tug Lynne Moran

Parsifal did not always have the black and blue paint scheme as shown in this 2011 video by friend of Baltimore Shipspotting binmei.jp. This 2017 video shows her still wearing this paint scheme. The first time I saw her in 2018 she was already wearing the scheme she currently wears.

In my 12 minute video below she can be seen arriving on the Chesapeake Bay before turning onto the Patapsco River. Floating whirly cranes can be seen working on BGE’s overhead power line project. Pilot boat Maryland can be seen turning to come alongside to put a pilot aboard. As she passes under the Key bridge tug Lynne Moran can be seen approaching on the left. After passing under the key bridge she is seen passing work being done on the overhead power lines project. Tug Lynne Moran can be seen giving the ship turning assistance in a timelapse sequence. Watch for the pilot boat passing and also the gantry cranes moving in the distance. In the final scene a good look at the ship’s oversized stern ramp can be had.
