Shy Bear Brewing December 20, 2019
Located in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, Shy Bear Brewing bills itself “The 10 barrel brewhouse is cranking out a wide variety of beer styles – some traditional in scope and others are progressive and full of whimsy. Meanwhile, the full service kitchen is executing many unique, lasting impressions on its own merit.”
This was the first brewery I visited where the flight contained no drinks I did not like. The presentation of the flight was also one of the easiest to photograph along with the names with the “flags” showing the names behind them. Each was $2.50 except Cookie Dipper which was $2.75. Flower Pants and Cookie Dipper ran neck and neck as my favorites. Schwarz’bear, Logan Guard, and Kick in the Candlewick each had distinctive flavors that I enjoyed and ran too close to me to rank. Check out their varieties by clicking here.
A sign board just inside the door indicated a couple specials, one of which was Venison Sliders. Although they come with lettuce and tomato I asked for without. Cheese was included though I am not sure what kind it was. The sliders were very delicious. The chips looked fancy and I expected them to also be delicious but unfortunately they lacked flavor though they had a nice crispness to them. At $9 the price was steep, especially for 3 little sliders, but as a novelty item I would recommend trying it once.
There wasn’t a menu in arm’s reach so I assumed they didn’t have much else in the food department but I discovered while looking over their website for this blog posting that they have several other interesting sounding items including Poutine which I have been wanting to try for some time and I would definitely have gotten it had I known.
I decided to buy a four pack of cans of the Flower Pants since it had a very pleasant flavor though for $20 for four 16oz it causes a moment of pause. Unfortunately the cans were mislabeled because what came out of the cans was bitter and had a coffee aftertaste. I poured out most of the two cans I tried into the drain as it is quite unpleasant. I would nevertheless recommend checking this place out if you’re in the area.
