Spaarnegracht Comes to Baltimore October 3, 2020
This 168x25m (551x82ft) Netherlands flagged general cargo ship was built in 2000 by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding in Tokyo, Japan according to scheepvaartwest and is one of spliethoff‘s s-type ships. A data sheet on her can be found here.
The first news item I found on this ship was a 2010 article by BDA Sun writing that this ship was to take two 70ft yachts that had taken part in an ocean race as well as a catamaran from Bermuda to Majorca.
January of 2016 found this ship the recipient of the prestigious Cane of Port of Sept-Îles when she was the first ship of the year to call having arrived from Savannah, Georgia. Its next call was here in Baltimore with 10,000 tons of aluminum.
This January 2018 press release from JAXPort announced this ship delivering a $3 million 331,000 pound diesel powered generator.
A few months later she had a bad day in the North Atlantic when she suffered engine failure on May 19th according to this Insurance Marine News marine accident round-up. According to this Seacontractors article she was towed by Dian Kingdom to Rotterdam, Netherlands on May 26th. The article notes she’d been carrying paper products from Husun, Sweden to Baltimore.
This 2014 video shows her arriving in Southampton, UK. This video from 2016 is a timelapse taken from the bridge of her arriving in the Canadian port of Corner Brook. This 2017 video shows her being loaded via her elevators. I am guessing rolls of paper.
In my 5 minute video below she is seen passing the outbound bulker Navios Galileo then a big yacht. As she nears several boats can be seen on deck. The pilot boat Baltimore can be seen alongside before moving away in the next scene.
