Spiegelgracht Comes to Baltimore July 19, 2020
This 168x25m (551x82ft) Netherlands flagged general cargo ship was built in 2000 by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding in Tokyo, Japan according to BalticShipping.com. She is one of spliethoff‘s S-Type ships and you can check out a brief data sheet on her by clicking here.
This article from March 2015 gives a small glimpse into life aboard this ship. This Insurance Marine News report from October 18, 2017 reports that this ship suffered a failure of her maine engine and nearly ran aground when departing the port of Klaipėda, Lithuania.
This 2012 video by the company that owns the ship talks about the boxes on the sides of the ships – they’re elevators! This 2014 video shows her on a river in Germany. This 2017 video shows her doing boat handling at Gdańsk, Poland.
In my 7 minute video below she can be seen approaching on the Patapsco River towards Baltimore, Maryland. The pilot boat Maryland can be seen coming alongside just as she begins her turn. Unfortunately this makes viewing the pilot boarding impossible. The ship makes her way uneventfully past the view of the camera amidst a bit of local boating traffic. In the scene after the ship passes under the Key bridge a crew member can be seen walking on deck towards the bow.
