Visit to MG Anthony Wayne (LT-803) July 27, 2019

This 39x11m (128x36ft) tugboat was built in 1993 by VT Halter Marine in Moss Point Mississippi according to this Ship Building History page for the US Army and intended to assist transports to dock. She is one of 6 Mgen. Nathanial Greene-class tugboats.

She is named for Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne. He earned the nickname Mad Anthony after a bold attack against the British during The Battle of Stony Point in New York in July 1779.

This tugboat has a complement of 24 which seems like a crowd but she has a large kitchen and mess/lounge space to accommodate them.

In the engine room a pair of EMD 2,550hp engines give this tugboat 5,100 total horsepower.

In 2005 this tugboat was the prototype for a reconstruction project for all 6 tugboats in this class. According to this Maritime Journal article the pilot house was lowered by removing the radio cabin and installing a larger pilot house. Stability, noise, and range of this tug class were all improved during this project.
